Sumba horse is known as Sandalwood (Cendana) because Sumba is famous for its very fragrant sandalwood. Sumba horse has a very strong physique although it is smaller than horses from Australia or from America.

Horse is a very popular animal on Sumba because horses have a social function that is very closely with its people for the needs of Indigenous and horse racing, the most popular being Pasola a traditional ceremonies held in western Sumba. Also horses are frequently seen in groups in savanna fields.
